Live Technical Production
Technical Direction
Technical direction turns separate vendors, devices, and operators into one show system. We own the technical plan, communication structure, and live execution.
#065
#048Live accountability
One position owns the technical whole.
Technical direction connects creative intent to signal plans, equipment, vendors, crew, rehearsal milestones, cues, and recovery decisions.
The role is most valuable when responsibilities are defined early, changes are controlled, and every department knows where live decisions are made.
The show-day sequence.
Each milestone closes a different class of risk before the audience enters.

Questions about technical direction.
What does a technical director own?
The scope may include technical design, department coordination, signal and power plans, crew structure, rehearsals, cues, changes, and failure recovery.
Is technical direction the same as show calling?
They can overlap, but show calling may focus on program cues while technical direction owns the systems and departments executing them.
Can JAZ lead outside production vendors?
Yes. Responsibilities, interfaces, deliverables, milestones, and communication paths are defined during advance.
When should the technical director join the project?
Before major venue, system, vendor, or program decisions become fixed. Early involvement reduces downstream conflicts.
